The heron has not been back since I caught it on camera eating what I now believe was probably my last grass carp. Since then I've seen one or two fish nervously swimming about - one of the new goldfish I bought a few weeks ago and a shubunkin which was born in my pond last year. Today I did this:

I knew that canyoneering ropework I learned would have wider applicability (that's all held together with clove hitches, lots and lots of clove hitches). I've also given the fish more places to hide by turning that large plant pot you can see in the picture upside down, propped up on a rock so the fish can get in and out. It should make a good and spacious air raid shelter.

Figuring I had only 2-3 fish left, Sylvia and I went to an aquatics centre and bought three cheap goldfish and a juvenile grass carp to see if the new arrangement works (to cries of, "let's go shopping for heron food").

It appears, however, that the introduction of the new fish has coaxed others out of hiding. I now know there are at least eleven fish in the pond, including a mature shubunkin, all of which I'd feared lost.

The webcam is still watching. Let's see what happens.
