Bra Rant

Feb. 5th, 2009 04:40 pm
OK, so I have long believed myself to be a 38B, and that's what I've bought. I calculated this using the "measure the underbust, add a few inches, subtract overbust to find cup size" method, and it seemed to more or less work. For reference, my underbust measurement is 35 inches.

However, yesterday saw me dashing round Cambridge trying to find some bridal lingerie to go under my dress. This hunt was unsuccessful, and I've since ordered some from the bridal shop where I got my dress and shoes, but in the course of this search, one person suggested I try Bravissimo, whom I always assumed I was way too small for.

Anyway, they were quiet when I went in, although I felt quite intimidated by the very large cup size bras hanging from the wall, and got me in for a fitting straight away.

The result of that fitting was that I was indeed too small for them, but their fitter told me I was a 34C, which surprised me a lot. I slunk away with my tail between my legs.

I have one 36C bra from M&S, which I bought as an alternative to the 38B in the same style, and it fits me OK, but I'd never even considered trying a 34 bandsize. In the interests of experimentation, I went to Debenhams and picked out some 34C and 36C bras to try on.

The results of the experiment, the 34Cs, when I got them on, were cutting me in half. Conclusion, I'm not a 34-anything (unsurprising since my actual underbust measurement is 35 inches), but the 36C, while fairly tight by what I'm used to, seemed to fit my breasts very nicely indeed.

The result of this experiment is that I'll probably be buying 36C bras in future, as my trusty 38Bs wear out, but I do have to wonder why, when we can build 200mph trains which travel from London to Paris in 2 hours, send probes to other planets, and design computers which perform billions of calculations a second, can the clothing retail industry not agree amongst itself how to work out what size bra a woman should be wearing?

"80% of women ae wearing the wrong size bra", it said in Bavissimo. This seems entirely unsurprising when the "experts" can't even tell us what size we are.

Argh! That's all.
